Basic Conversational Tagalog Phrases

Saturday, July 13, 2013

In the previous post, we have learned the basic greetings in Tagalog. In this post, we learn the basic Tagalog phrases that are very helpful when you travel to the Philippines. It is important to note that the Filipino usually mixed their language with English so words and phrases like "Hi", "Hello", "I'm Sorry", "Thank you", and "You're welcome" are more often used than their Tagalog equivalents. Below are some of the phrases that you should memorize before you go to the Philippines. If there's no choice, you can always speak in English since most Filipinos understands English and can speak the language pretty well.

What is your name?
Anong pangalan mo?

Translation: Anong (what is the), pangalan (name), mo (you).
Note: Anong is the contraction of "Ano ang" where "Ano" means "What."

***

My name is ____.
Ako si _______.
Ang pangalan ko ay _____.

Translation: Ang (the), pangalan (name), ko (me), ay (is)
Note: In reality, when Filipinos ask "What is your name?" or "Anong pangalan mo?," you should usually answer them with your first name directly. Well, I think this is the same in English conversations.

***

How are you?
Kumusta?
Kumusta ka?

***

I'm Fine.
Mabuti.
Ayos lang.
Mabuti naman.

Translation: I am (Ako ) fine (mabuti).
Note: In everyday conversations, the words "I" and "You" are usually omitted. For example, the reply "Mabuti." is really "Mabuti ako" but it is understood that the person is referring to himself.

***

Nice to meet you.
Ikinagagalak kong makilala ka. (formal, very seldom used, not used in everyday conversations).
Note: "Nice to meet you." is usually used as is in everyday conversations.

***

Thank you.
Salamat.

Thank you very much.
Maraming salamat.
Translation: Marami (many), so "Maraming salamat" literally means "Many thank you's."

***

You're welcome.
Walang anuman.
Translation: Literal translation of walang ano man is really like "Don't mention it."
Note: The English phrase "Thank you" and "You're welcome" are also used in everyday conversations.

***

Yes.
"Oo." or "Opo."
Note: The word "Opo" is the polite word for "Yes." It is used when talking to older people or people with high positions.

***

No.
"Hindi" or "Hindi po [polite]".
Note: To make the words or sentence more polite, po are usually added at the end of the sentence. For example, "Salamat po.""

***

I'm sorry.
Sori (informal).
Pasensya na (informal).
Paumahin (formal).

Excuse me (used as is).

Goodbye
"Bye" or "Paalam(seldom used)."
